Our Story

For almost 30 years, Progressive Heating, Air, and Plumbing has been located in and served Coweta County and metro Atlanta.

Greg Wallace discovered what hard work meant every summer during high school. His first job was helping his brother and sister, working with them in their pool business, Boscoe’s Pools. Being mechanically inclined runs in the Wallace family, as his dad was one of the engineers who developed Hartsfield-Jackson airport.

In 1981, Greg worked his first job in HVAC at the brand new airport, working on their industrial heating and cooling systems at the young age of 18. He stayed for seven years! On June 7th, 1989 – Greg finished the process of getting his Conditioned Air Non-Restricted license through the state of Georgia and decided to move on to other areas in HVAC.

Upon departure, he shifted his focus to residential and light commercial, working with John Valentine. After plenty of experience and hard work, Greg started Progressive in 1994 out of his house on Lancaster Way with a helper and a subcontractor. At the time, his son Hunter was just three years old and spent many nights growing up, running late-night and emergency service calls with his dad. In 1998, Greg hired the employee with the most tenure at our company, Josh W (who is now our installation manager). The next year, he hired our second longest-tenured team member, Chuck M (our lead service technician). These guys have seen it all!

After moving into a new house in Moreland off of West Grantville Road and running the company out of the shop located there, Progressive moved its office to Temple Avenue in 2001. During that time, Darren McDonald joined our team. Darren has been with us since 2008 and has worked up from an apprentice to lead installer, and service technician and now works as a Home Solutions Advisor.

In late 2010, Greg bought the building Progressive is in now on Tower Place in Newnan. PHAC relocated to the building at the end of March in 2011 and hired Samantha Brazie as a marketing coordinator to get more involved in our community and increase our presence online. She would soon learn much more and grow to be promoted to be the General Manager in 2023. Hunter also started in 2011, working first as an apprentice to a lead installer and then to be one of our trusted and well-trained Home Solutions Advisors.

And who can leave the creation of our favorite mascot out – our best bud Breezy was released into our community in 2012.

In 2019, Progressive Heating and Air became Progressive Heating, Air and Plumbing as we expanded into another trade. Experiencing some growing pains, we were happy to find Mike Kessler, our plumber. And in 2023, we added another building on Tower Place so we could increase our warehouse and training space.

When asked how HVAC has changed over the years, Greg said, “We’re a lot better than we used to be. Technology in HVAC has really taken off and if we were going to stay in business and do our jobs well, we had to adapt and embrace everything coming our way. Gone were the days of the ‘beer can cold’ refrigerant line! Motors are more advanced, and controls (thermostats) are like small computers compared to what they once were….but in some ways they are easier to work on. We have to carry a lot more parts than ever and don’t see it going back in the other direction.” Greg remembers three-digit Nextel numbers and reflected on how his license number is only four digits where now license numbers are in the 20,000+ range in Georgia. “Air conditioners are not just boxes anymore. It has to be tuned like an automobile. The homeowner may think it’s working fine, but it could be costing them 20% more than it should. That’s why we do the training and third-party testing we do. There’s so much more to HVAC than there ever was. Our office gets notifications if there are issues with systems before the customer knows at times. We are able to send automatic texts to let customers know we are on the way, have better control over our schedule, and be as efficient as possible so we are not passing those costs on to our customers.”

About our involvement in the community: “It’s very important that you work within the community you’re in. That’s how it should be. We take care of people in their homes. These are the people that pay our salaries and take care of us, we wouldn’t be here without them. So if we have extra, it should go back to our community. Almost all of our employees live in Coweta County…and if not, just outside of it. We buy all of our vehicles here. Our two major vendors opened offices here just so we could conveniently buy from them….which accounts for about 90% of our job-related purchases. This is better for our county because the tax money stays here, and that’s part of how we support a healthy community. We’re very proud of that.

Although the majority of businesses around us have sold to private equity, there are a few owner-operators left. We plan on keeping it that way. We want to keep supporting our city, our schools, our county, and our community far into the future. We are in the service business, that’s what we do….and we are here to continuously train our team to be the absolute best at what they do. I’m so tired of larger businesses buying out smaller ones – the customer is the one that always loses. They become a number and the service and experience just goes downhill because they don’t have the competition anymore. You see it in everything: mobile phones, WiFi, cable, airlines…everything we use. As long as I’m around, I plan on doing what we have always done – to be the best at what we do and to give the very best customer experience to our customers.”
